We’ve seen this unfortunate sort of thing happen before. An example (though not recent still illustrates my point) is the Cindy Cupps website. Almost overnight, this popular website vanished. And you’re right. No one realises exactly how much the costs can run, sometimes not even our favourite stars at these sites. That sucks when you’re serving each client individually, but modern content distribution systems mitigate this problem. If she were to deliver this content via a private tracker on BitTorrent, she could provide her website as an “HTTP Seed”, but then also spread the cost of downloading to the members. This would fractionalize the amount of actual bandwidth she needed to deliver her content, and she could even withdraw from the peerlist all together until she was needed again(as reported by the tracker). That’s free content distribution thanks to your fans own favored technology, and all you’ve got to do is embrace it. At least she’s not fingerprinting each JPG individually w/ imagemagick to maintain sessions via sidechannel, and killing off people’s accounts.
This is all beside the point though. If remaining profitable was her problem, then why wouldn’t she ask her loyal fanbase for free hosting/consulting? I’d pony up.
By reducing overhead sufficiently she can establish a semi lifelong revenue stream, and there’s two ways to go about that. She can either shoot a ton really fast and put it out there Sasha Grey style, or she can release new-old sets well into “retirement” forever living in her glory days. Such sad news! I’m subscribing; couldn’t afford to, in the past. I dearly hope their sites will be archived for a long time. It seems that some excellent photo sets, such as Kelly Burgess and her blue bathrobe are essentially gone, except for one image.
